Carbon Credits

Guaranteed:

  • Real-world impact

  • Verifiable, tangible benefits

  • Community and Environmental Safeguards

Mere Plantations, through the commercial growing of Tectona grandis, generates certified carbon removal credits. With a full Warranty and Indemnity ("W&I") insurance policy, and certification from Cercarbono, our carbon project demonstrates real-world bankability and genuine global-south climate solutions.

Degraded Land to Certified Carbon

Human impact on the atmosphere, through the emission of greenhouse gasses ("GHGs") is increasing. In 2024, the atmosphere contained an average of 422 parts per million ("ppm") of Carbon Dioxide. This is an increase of 19% since 1990, and almost double the concentration before the industrial revolution.

Businesses, individuals and groups are becoming increasingly aware of the need to reduce emissions, remove greenhouse gasses and restore critical ecosystems across the globe.

Whilst small changes in behaviour can lead to reductions in individual emissions, the scale necessary for genuine climate impact requires climate solutions which are socially, environmentally and commercially viable.

Initial due diligence on sites. We are looking for ideal growing conditions, logistical access, co-operative communities and opportunities for forest restoration where it is most needed.

1st Year

The full nursery process begins, alongside simultaneous final pre-planting land preparation. After the nursery process, seedlings are ready for planting.  We then commence regular weeding, singling, beat-up, fire ride maintenance, security patrols.

Throughout the process we carry out stakeholder engagement with neighbouring land users and communities, and begin our field engagement with local Forestry Commission. Only after this stage can carbon documentation be written and the validation process can begin.

Pre-Planting to Carbon Credits

2nd Year

With our carbon validation complete, verification can begin. The process only starts once trees are considered "established" (more than 12 months in the ground). The usual forestry activities, such as pruning and weeding, continue. Once the trees are above 1m tall, cyclone mowing can begin, building topsoil and improving biodiversity from the ground up.

Discussions and contracting with local Chiefs and traditional authorities, Forestry Commission, Local and National government. Free, Prior and Informed Consent discussions with local communities to provide assurances and ensure the project is beneficial.

Finalising benefit sharing agreements, land leases. Environmental Impact Assessments, baseline monitoring and land preparation all carried out.  We construct fire rides, access roads and produce fire/environmental monitoring plans and SOPs.

Water and river management, soil testing, stock take of mature trees all occurs before the first tree is planted. GPS demarcation, as well as the satellite monitoring system setup are completed. We then procure land for the nursery, and carry out construction and preparation for the first seedlings. We ensure water security for the nursery process, and commence the hiring/training of staff.

Carbon validation and verification complete, including on site audits, full documentation reviews, stakeholder engagement and protocol adherence.

Carbon credits certified, insurance underwriting carried out - credits available for sale.

We could do this quicker. And cheaper.

If we wanted to plant a tree for a dollar, we could do it.

We could make claims about restoring tens of thousands of hectares.

We could claim to be changing lives and improving communities.

We could have certified carbon credits in the market place after 18 months, available to buy for less than 5 dollars.

But we aren't going to.

Our ethos involves growing trees, not just planting them. Cutting corners on the cost of nursery processes, planting and maintenance will ultimately lead to a lower quality product, for carbon and for timber. Mortality rates will be higher, and at such a low cost there is no room to beat-up, or replace failed trees, to ensure long-term impact. Using cheaper methods for land clearing, such as chemical weeding and burning, sacrifices top-soil improvements and can contribute to further degradation.

We are proud to contribute to genuine, tangible social improvements. Our permanent staff, ranging from mechanics to tractor operators and security staff, earn higher wages than some local doctors, managers and graduates. Our field staff, the core of our operations, earn at a greater rate than other forestry and agribusiness jobs in the local area, whilst retaining the flexibility to manage their farms, and attend the local market at a time when produce prices will be lower.

Extensive due diligence on ideal sites, local communities and country-level legislation is both time and cost intensive. The ideal site is determined by anywhere from 10 crucial factors to hundreds of individual characteristics. It is this intensity of practices that leads to high-integrity carbon credits. As we wait until the trees are established, we can rely on what HAS happened, rather than the promise of what MIGHT happen. This translates to certainty for the buyer, and a more thorough audit from the VVB and Standard.

How your carbon credit purchase is spent

When we sell a carbon credit, registry fees, carbon standard fees and sales commission are settled fit. After this, the insurance premiums are paid for the buyers W&I policy.

Once the carbon sales payments are made, 10% of the net proceeds aof the sale of carbon credits are set aside under Mere's benefit sharing agreement. The benefit sharing agreement covers payments to the Ghana Forestry Commission, traditional Landowner and local communities.

A further 10% of the net credit income is put into a voluntary social responsibility fund, identifying causes in the UK and Ghana that the company wishes to support. These have included funding healthcare initiatives in Ghana for our staff and their families, clean drinking projects as well as food banks and rehabilitation charities such as the Rose Road Association ( (https://www.roseroad.org.uk/ ) in the UK.

The remaining income funds further planting and commercial avenues for the company.
